The non-governmental organization Women On the Move hosted its 24th annual Cancer Awareness Walk on Sunday, honoring both cancer survivors and those who have lost their lives to the disease.
The walk began at the Linden Utility Service Cooperative Society Limited in Wismar and concluded at the Linden/Georgetown Park in McKenzie, drawing participants of all ages, including families and organizations.
Many attendees wore pink and carried banners with uplifting messages.
Camille Cummings, the Public Relations Officer for Women On the Move, shared that 15 new cancer survivors were added to their list this year, though sadly, three women lost their battle with the disease.
She emphasized the importance of survivors coming forward, noting that the youngest survivor on record is a second-form student.
Dr. Salome Henry from the One Mile Health Centre encouraged the public to maintain regular health check-ups and be mindful of their diets to aid in early detection and prevention of cancer.
At the event’s conclusion, several participants were recognized, including the oldest cancer survivor, the largest group, the best-dressed group, and the best banner.
Additionally, seven children were honored for being the youngest to complete the walk alongside their parents.
