West Indies head coach Shane Deitz expressed disappointment with the team’s performance in the opening T20 match of their series against India on Sunday in Mumbai.
Despite strong performances from Deandra Dottin and Qiana Joseph, who both contributed with the bat, the Caribbean women fell short by 49 runs.
After winning the toss and electing to field, the West Indies bowlers struggled to contain the Indian batswomen. Smriti Mandhana (54) and Jemimah Rodrigues (73 from 35 balls) were the standout performers for India, who posted a commanding 195 for 4 from their 20 overs.
Karishma Ramharack was the pick of the Windies bowlers with figures of 2 for 18.
In response, Qiana Joseph’s 49 off 33 balls and Dottin’s powerful 52 from 28 balls, which included 4 fours and 3 sixes, gave the West Indies hope.
However, the Windies women were ultimately bowled out for 146 for 7, losing the match by 49 runs.
Coach Deitz, reflecting on the team’s performance, stated that he was unsure why the players didn’t perform to their potential but hoped they would regroup for the second T20 on Tuesday.
The two teams are scheduled to play three T20 matches and a series of one-day internationals, with the second T20 match set for Tuesday.
