Windies Bowlers Make Inroads on Day 1 of First Test vs. Pakistan

By Eric Collymore, January 17, 2025

In a thrilling start to the first Test match between the West Indies and Pakistan in Multan, the Windies bowlers made an early impact before Pakistan staged a recovery to slow down the Caribbean side’s momentum.

Despite losing more than 48 overs due to dense fog, which delayed the start of play, the Windies, having been put to bowl first after losing the toss, made early inroads.

Led by fast bowler Jayden Seales, who claimed three wickets for just 21 runs, the West Indies quickly reduced Pakistan to a precarious 46 for 4 after only 13 overs.

Pakistan’s captain Shan Masood (11), Muhammad Huraira (6), Kamran Ghulam (5), and Babar Azam (8) all fell cheaply, leaving the hosts in trouble.

However, Pakistan’s fortunes changed when Mohammad Rizwan (51) and Saud Shakeel (56) combined for a near-century stand.

The partnership guided Pakistan to a more respectable position of 143/4 by the close of play on day one, staving off further West Indies success for the moment.

Apart from Seales’ impressive performance, Gudakesh Motie also contributed with one wicket.

Seales reflected on his bowling performance after the day’s play, stating that he focused on building pressure with consistent deliveries.

Despite being the only fast bowler in the squad, the 23-year-old from Trinidad and Tobago remains confident in his ability to continue delivering in the match.

Although pleased with his efforts, Seales believes the outcome of the match might ultimately hinge on the performance of the spinners.

With a lot still to play for, both teams will be eyeing day two with keen interest.
