WHO Reminds: COVID-19 Vaccination Still Essential

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reiterated the importance of vaccination against COVID-19, emphasizing that it remains an essential tool in combating the pandemic.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO Technical Lead on COVID-19, highlighted that while the impact of COVID-19 has decreased significantly, the global situation is still being closely monitored.

During a recent update, Dr. Kerkhove cautioned that despite reduced hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths, COVID-19 continues to pose a significant burden.

She noted that there are still approximately 10-12 deaths per month attributed to the virus, particularly among older individuals and those with underlying health conditions, as well as those who remain unvaccinated.

Dr. Michael Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, echoed Dr. Kerkhove’s sentiments, reporting an increase in COVID-19 reinfections.

However, he emphasized that individuals who are fully vaccinated, especially older adults and those with underlying health conditions, have significantly lower chances of severe outcomes from the virus.

Both Dr. Kerkhove and Dr. Ryan reaffirmed the WHO’s commitment to tracking the virus and providing updates as necessary.
