The West Indies Women’s cricket team ended their T20 series against India with a 2-1 loss, and team captain Hayley Matthews believes the primary factor behind their defeat was poor execution.
Matthews highlighted the need for more discipline in both batting and bowling moving forward.
Speaking about the loss, Matthews reflected, “It probably came down to execution. We needed to be more disciplined with the ball and build more pressure on the Indian batsmen.”
The series provided valuable lessons for the team, and Matthews emphasized how important it would be for their upcoming fixtures: “We were disciplined in parts, but we need to carry that through to the ODI series as well,” she added.
In Thursday’s match, the West Indies won the toss and put India to bat first. However, they struggled to contain India’s top-order as the Indian team posted a formidable total of 217/4 in their 20 overs.
Smriti Mandhana led the charge with a blazing 77 from 47 balls, while Jemimah Rodrigues (39) and Raghvi Bist (31) provided strong support.
Richa Ghosh came in late and hit a quick-fire 54 from just 21 balls.
In response, the West Indies batters fell short.
Chinelle Henry was the standout performer with a rapid 43 from 16 balls, including four sixes and three fours.
However, key players like Matthews (22), Deandra Dottin (25), and Shemaine Campbelle (17) got starts but failed to convert, leaving the team at 157/9 after their 20 overs.
Indian bowler Radha Yadav was the star of the match, taking 4 wickets for 29 runs to seal India’s victory.
The West Indies team will need to address their execution and discipline as they prepare for their next challenge in the upcoming ODI series.
