Public Works Minister Juan Edghill recently met with members of the Berbice Chamber of Commerce to provide updates on the upcoming projects slated for the region.
The major highlight of the meeting was the announcement that work on expanding the West Coast Berbice corridor into a four-lane road is set to commence in mid-August.
This significant infrastructure project follows two years of consultations and surveying.
Minister Edghill revealed that the contract for the expansion has been awarded to an Indian company.
The project is divided into three segments, with the Indian company responsible for two of these segments.
The first segment extends from the Canje Bridge to Johns, the second from Bloomfield to #54, and the third segment covers from #55 to Moleson Creek.
The details for the final segment’s development are yet to be finalized.
Concerns were raised by the Chambers regarding space constraints for the expansion in Rose Hall and Corriverton.
In response, Minister Edghill assured that solutions have been developed to address these ‘choke points,’ including the addition of bypass roads.
The expansion is part of a broader effort to accommodate the increasing commercial and industrial traffic using the West Coast Berbice corridor for trade and business.
Minister Edghill also promised continued engagement with the chambers to ensure that community consultations are effectively carried out.
