VP Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo Dismisses Opposition Leader’s Claims of Discrimination in Road Construction

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has responded to accusations of discriminatory practices related to the construction of the four-lane road along the railway embankment on the East Coast of Demerara.

Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton had claimed that the government was favoring certain areas, suggesting discrepancies between the originally planned road width and the actual construction in areas considered strongholds of the ruling party.

During a recent news conference, Norton alleged that while the government initially promised the road would be constructed 20 feet from the center, it was being built wider in areas predominantly supporting the PPP. He criticized the government’s approach as discriminatory.

In rebuttal, Dr. Jagdeo labeled Norton’s comments as unfounded and racially charged.

He assured that the project’s details would be transparent once completed.

Jagdeo also addressed the historical challenges of acquiring land for road construction, indicating that previous difficulties were addressed in the current project.

The Vice President emphasized that the government remains committed to advancing infrastructure projects aimed at improving the quality of life for all Guyanese, irrespective of their political affiliations or backgrounds.
