In a special Emancipation Day ceremony, Victoria village celebrated its 185-year history with the unveiling of a new arch, symbolizing the community’s progress.
The arch, a collaborative effort between the village and the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports, was completed at a cost of over two million dollars.
Ken Semple from the Victoria Emancipation Anniversary Planning Committee highlighted the extensive fundraising efforts and expressed gratitude to Minister Ramson and the Ministry for their financial support.
The arch was designed by Andrew Dosantos and 14-year-old Kayden Meusa, whose design won a competition.
Kayden Meusa shared his inspiration for the design, which draws on Victoria’s rich history.
The arch, which now brightens the village, was celebrated by locals, including Andre Wilson and Rochelle Vackerie, who expressed their pride and excitement.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall and Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, who delivered the keynote address.
Dr. Anthony emphasized the importance of using historical sacrifices to advance the country.
The celebrations will continue with a bonfire, steel pan performances, a candlelight march, and a talent show on Murphy’s Lawn in Victoria on Saturday evening.
