Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has issued a stern warning to security companies regarding the proper handling of employees’ National Insurance Scheme (NIS) contributions.

This announcement follows the launch of an investigation into the deductions made by security firms, particularly those contracted by the government.

Addressing the issue during a press conference, Vice President Jagdeo emphasized that employees must not be disenfranchised or suffer due to employers’ negligence.

He highlighted that concerns about NIS contributions were brought to his attention during visits to several communities.

Jagdeo stated that security companies are responsible for ensuring timely payment of their workers and the remittance of NIS deductions.

This is crucial so that employees can access benefits in case of injury or other qualifying circumstances.

Teams from the National Insurance Scheme are now tasked with inspecting security companies across Guyana.

The investigation has a two-week deadline for presenting findings.

Jagdeo indicated that companies found to be non-compliant with NIS remittance regulations risk losing their government contracts.

As the inspection process continues, the government remains committed to protecting the rights and welfare of all workers, ensuring they receive the benefits to which they are entitled under the NIS.
