Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has assured the public that any increase in freight charges should not result in higher prices for consumer goods.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect consumers from freight cost fluctuations remain in place.
During the pandemic, the government maintained the old freight cost despite fluctuations, a measure intended to prevent price increases for consumers.
Dr. Jagdeo highlighted that this policy has not been reversed and should continue to shield consumers from any freight-related price hikes.
He pointed out that even when freight rates decreased, many businesses did not adjust their selling prices accordingly, retaining the benefits of lower costs.
Now that freight rates have risen again, Dr. Jagdeo insists there should not be a significant increase in consumer prices as a result.
Additionally, Dr. Jagdeo urged consumers to be vigilant against exploitative practices by businesses that might use the opportunity to unfairly raise prices.
He advised consumers to avoid patronizing businesses that engage in price gouging.
This reassurance from the Vice President aims to alleviate concerns about potential cost-of-living increases due to higher freight charges, reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting consumer interests.
