Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has staunchly defended the government’s recent decision to acquire two India-made planes for the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), amid criticisms from the opposition.

The arrival of the two aircraft last week sparked debate, with opposition voices questioning the necessity and cost-effectiveness of the purchase.

However, Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that these additions to the GDF’s fleet will significantly enhance the country’s defence capabilities.

Addressing concerns raised by the opposition, Dr. Jagdeo refuted claims that the aircraft were second-hand and that the purchase price was inflated.

He provided a detailed breakdown of the costs involved, emphasizing transparency and accountability in the procurement process.

Furthermore, Dr. Jagdeo highlighted the favorable terms of the financing arrangement with India’s Export-Import Bank, which offers significantly lower interest rates compared to commercial sources.

Speaking specifically about the Dornier 228 aircraft, Dr. Jagdeo underscored its suitability for Guyana’s needs, citing its versatility and reliability.

He noted its capacity to accommodate various military and civilian applications, further justifying the choice of these planes for the GDF.

Dr. Jagdeo also contrasted the recent acquisition with previous government purchases, asserting that the Dornier 228 aircraft and the Bell 412 helicopters were procured brand-new during the PPP administration.

In contrast, he alleged that the previous government had acquired older and used aircraft, including SkyVan and Britten-Norman Islander models.

The Vice President’s defense of the aircraft purchase aims to assuage concerns and provide clarity on the government’s strategic decisions regarding national defence.
