Vice President Jagdeo Calls for Greater Empathy in Pension Distribution

By Saskia Warrick | January 11, 2025

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has expressed concern over the challenges retirees continue to face in accessing their old age pensions, urging greater empathy and accountability from public sector professionals involved in the process.

While the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has made changes to expedite the distribution of pension books, issues remain, particularly regarding the conduct of some officers in charge of these services.

Vice President Jagdeo criticized the treatment of pensioners, many of whom endure long waits and are turned away after traveling significant distances.

Calling such behavior “disgusting,” Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the need for public servants to prioritize professionalism and compassion.

He encouraged citizens to use social media to hold officers accountable for their actions.

The Vice President stressed that the government remains committed to refining the system to ensure a smoother and more respectful process for pensioners.
