Venezuelans Represent Fastest Growing Inmate Population in Guyana

During a Year-In-Review Press Conference, Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn revealed that Venezuelans constitute the fastest-growing segment of the inmate population in Guyana.

Currently, 23 Venezuelans are incarcerated in the local prison system for various offenses.

Minister Benn acknowledged that some were arrested for firearm-related charges, while others faced charges related to disorderly conduct and murder.

He emphasized that the influx of Venezuelans has contributed to their status as the fastest-growing foreign nationals in the prison system.

However, it’s important to note that this figure represents less than one percent of the approximately 28,000 Venezuelans residing in Guyana.

Minister Benn affirmed that his ministry is placing significant emphasis on addressing the migrant situation, ensuring proper vetting, identification, and support for those coming from Venezuela and other countries.

In his statement, Minister Benn expressed concern about the growing number of young Venezuelan men entering the prison system due to their involvement in criminal activities. He stressed the need to address and manage this issue effectively.

As of January 17, there are 2,240 male inmates and 60 female inmates incarcerated in prisons across the country.

The revelation about the growing number of Venezuelans in the prison population highlights the challenges associated with migration and the importance of addressing social issues to prevent criminal involvement.
