Vendors Call for Rebuilding of Stabroek Market Wharf

By Nakasia Logan

Following the collapse of the Stabroek Market wharf roof, vendors are urging authorities to rebuild the structure, emphasizing the need for a modernized facility while preserving its historical significance.

The collapse, which occurred on April 17, resulted in injuries to five individuals and damage to several businesses.

However, swift action from the Ministry of Public Works and the Mayor and City Council facilitated the clearing of debris from the area.

Now, vendors are expressing their views on the future of the wharf. Gary Leacock, a vendor, suggests the construction of a parking lot to alleviate congestion on the roads.

Others, like Sarah Robinson, envision a two-decker setup with separate sections for selling fruits and beverages.

Vinod Gupsammy highlights the importance of creating a modern shopping area with ample parking space, catering to both vendors and customers alike.

Former Mayor of Georgetown, Patricia Chase-Green, acknowledges past efforts to rehabilitate the wharf but notes challenges in reaching an agreement with vendors on relocation.

The government has pledged support for rebuilding efforts, attributing the collapse to the City Council’s failure to maintain public infrastructure adequately.

As discussions continue on the future of the Stabroek Market wharf, vendors and authorities alike are hopeful for a solution that balances modernization with historical preservation.
