Veerasammy Permaul Sets Sights on 700 First-Class Wickets After Milestone Achievement

February 17, 2025

Veteran Guyanese left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul has set his sights on achieving 700 first-class wickets after recently reaching a career milestone of 652 wickets.

Permaul, who has represented Guyana since 2007, achieved this feat during a rain-affected match against the West Indies Academy at the National Stadium in Providence on Saturday.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, the Guyana Harpy Eagles were able to secure first-innings points against the West Indies Academy.

Permaul’s contribution was crucial, with 574 of his first-class wickets coming in Guyana’s colors.

When asked about his goal of reaching 700 wickets, Permaul acknowledged that while it is a significant milestone, he remains focused on maintaining consistency in his performance.

He emphasized that in cricket, anything can happen, and continued hard work and consistency are key to achieving long-term success.

Permaul credited the partnership with fellow bowler Motie for their combined efforts in helping Guyana snatch the first-innings advantage.

The duo’s experience and consistency were instrumental in challenging the young players of the West Indies Academy, resulting in a positive outcome for the Harpy Eagles.

In the match, Guyana made the surprising decision to bat first, posting 253 runs in 63.1 overs.

The West Indies Academy responded with 249 runs in 83.2 overs.

Guyana faced difficulties in their second innings, collapsing to 44/4 in eight overs before the match was called a draw, with the Harpy Eagles securing the first-innings points.

As defending champions, the Harpy Eagles are determined to retain their title in the ongoing competition.
