Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall SC has issued a strong appeal to opposition political parties to utilise the ongoing Claims and Objections period to substantiate and address allegations of bloating on Guyana’s voters’ list.
During Claims and Objections, persons can either apply to have persons taken off the preliminary voters list or have themselves added to the list. According to Nandlall, the Opposition has no excuse for not helping to “cleanse” the voters’ list of any names they believe should not be included.
“I’m calling on the PNC, I’m calling on the APNU and I’m calling upon all those who have the tendency to allege that the registration list and voters list are bloated to go now and remove the bloat, go to the registration centers across the country and rinse the list,” he said during last evening’s ‘Issues in the News’ programme.
That being said, Nandlall was not optimistic that the Opposition would take up the challenge, even though the law gives them an opportunity to do so.
“They will not go but once the occasion arises next week and is opportune for them to make that ridiculous allegation they will make it all over again,” he further lamented.
GECOM’s Claims and Objections exercise began on Monday to finalize the Official List of Electors and objections can be submitted up to January 22, 2026.
The claims aspect of the exercise will end on January 18. Meanwhile, registration offices will operate extended weekday and weekend hours during the exercise.
