The United States has announced a suspension in the processing of immigrant visas for several Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries—excluding Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. The move is part of a broader pause affecting 75 countries worldwide.
CARICOM nations impacted by the suspension include Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
According to State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott, the pause in visa processing comes as the US reassesses its procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who may become reliant on welfare or public benefits, and does not affect visitor visas.
This pause is expected to take effect January 21.
