A team of eye specialists from the United States has arrived in Region Six to perform various types of eye surgeries at the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Hospital.
Regional Chairman David Armogan expressed gratitude for the efforts of the visiting medical team in enhancing the vision of residents in Region Six.
He highlighted the prevalence of diabetic patients in the region and the associated retinal problems, underscoring the importance of expert intervention.
Armogan also emphasized the need for additional equipment to facilitate training for local medical professionals, envisioning a future where Guyanese doctors can independently perform such surgeries.
The visiting team has been conducting surgeries since Monday and has already screened over 80 patients.
Their goal is to perform more than 30 laser eye surgeries by the end of the week.
Patients from various regions, as well as neighboring countries, have sought treatment at the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Hospital, reflecting the critical need for specialized eye care services in the area.
Dr. Abrahm White, one of the ophthalmologists on the team, highlighted the importance of these surgeries in improving patients’ quality of life.
He underscored the significance of collaboration between local and international medical professionals in addressing eye health issues in the region.
Meanwhile, the Medical Director at the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Hospital expressed satisfaction with the progress of the surgeries, noting the absence of complications thus far.
She expressed optimism about continuing the partnership with the overseas medical team to further benefit the community.
