As part of Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week, observed from May 13-17, 2024, citizens are urged to take proactive health measures to combat mosquito-borne diseases.

Under the theme “Small Bite, Big Threat,” and this year’s slogan “Stop Disease Transmission, Start Source Reduction,” the initiative emphasizes preventive action against mosquitoes.

Crystal Crawford, Head of the Department of Medical Entomology Unit at the Ministry of Health, underscores the importance of destroying mosquito breeding sites to limit disease spread.

“By keeping environments clean and eliminating mosquito larvae, we can prevent adult mosquitoes from emerging,” Crawford emphasizes.

Citizens are advised to cover all water sources, especially during the rainy season, to prevent mosquito breeding.

Additionally, those experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills, and headaches are urged to seek prompt medical attention.

Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week aims to raise awareness about diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and Zika transmitted by mosquitoes.

In line with this initiative, the Ministry of Health has organized various activities, including school and community visits, and medical outreaches across Guyana’s regions.

By following health guidelines and participating in awareness initiatives, citizens can contribute to a healthier and safer community.
