Development works are actively progressing for the New Corentyne River Bridge, which is set to be a crucial infrastructure link between Guyana and Suriname.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill recently provided an update on the project during a meeting with the Berbice Chamber of Commerce.

Minister Edghill indicated that the project is currently awaiting approval on financing arrangements.

Both the Presidents of Guyana and Suriname have approached the Chinese government to explore concessional financing options for the US $300 million initiative.

Once the financing agreement is finalized, construction will commence.

The bridge is planned to span from South Drain to Long Island, with a connecting road extending through Long Island to Moleson Creek.

Surveying for the main access road leading to and beyond the bridge has already been completed.

Development works from Moleson Creek towards the El Dorado area are underway, including the construction of supporting infrastructure such as bridges.

This road will not only facilitate access to the bridge but also open up new agricultural lands in the region.

The bridge project, first proposed in a 2020 memorandum between Guyana and Suriname, aims to enhance connectivity and support regional integration efforts involving Suriname, Guyana, and Brazil.
