The University of Guyana (UG) has marked a significant milestone in dental education with the official opening of its new Dental Training Clinic and Laboratory.

This state-of-the-art facility, designed to enhance the training of dental students, now accommodates up to 15 students, a notable increase from the previous capacity of just six.

The clinic offers hands-on training in various dental procedures, including fillings, cleanings, braces, and root canals.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Paloma Mohamed, highlighted the facility’s importance, noting that it would allow the institution to train more dentists while providing affordable dental services to the university community.

Since the inception of UG’s dental program, 114 dentists have graduated, and with this upgraded facility, the university aims to significantly increase this number.

Professor Mohamed also shared plans for community outreach, including placing additional dental chairs in Berbice and other communities, as well as a mobile dental unit to reach underserved areas.

The expansion was made possible through key investments from the Greater Guyana Initiative, underscoring the university’s commitment to improving both dental education and the country’s healthcare sector.
