The University of Guyana (UG) has formalized an agreement to establish a satellite campus in Aishalton, Region Nine, marking a significant step towards expanding educational opportunities in the South Rupununi.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by UG, the Aishalton village, and the South Rupununi District Council, paving the way for UG’s Maoka Taawa University of the Forests.
This new campus aims to serve 21 communities in the South Rupununi, addressing a critical gap where currently less than 5% of children who complete secondary education advance to tertiary levels.
Initially, the campus will offer seven disciplines, including agriculture, environmental sciences, and construction and infrastructure, among others.
Michael Thomas, Chairman of the South Rupununi District Council, highlighted the transformative potential of this initiative.
The University of Guyana has indicated that 150 students will be accepted from the 254 who have already expressed interest in the satellite university.
Vice Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin praised the dedication of the village leaders to making this historical project a reality.
The Vice Chancellor also outlined plans to create a joint management team and train local community members to manage the programs with external support, ensuring the sustainability and relevance of the education provided.
This initiative is poised to significantly enhance educational access and opportunities in the South Rupununi, contributing to the region’s development and empowerment.
