At its 58th Convocation Ceremony, held in celebration of its 61st anniversary, the University of Guyana (UG) announced the conferral of honorary doctorates to eleven distinguished individuals in recognition of their extraordinary achievements in their respective fields.
The selection process for these awards spans a year and involves multiple steps, beginning with nominations submitted by the University’s academic divisions.
The awards recognize exceptional contributions in areas of innovation, practice, and leadership.
The 2024 honorees are:
- Sir Ronald Ramjattan, Founder of Barron Foods, for his impact on business excellence.
- Dr. Narendra Chetram Singh, a Toronto-based medical innovator and educator, for his work in neonatal care.
- Arif Ali, CEO and Founder of Hansib Publishing, for his contributions to literature and publishing.
- Prof. Ian Robertson, a Creole linguistics and English language specialist, for his academic contributions.
- Victor Compton Insanally, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, for his community-building efforts.
- Christopher Fernandes, a shipping magnate, for his role in advancing the maritime sector.
- Ralph Bazilio, a finance and management specialist, for his work in economic development.
- Ann Greene, a child rights activist and social worker, for her advocacy for vulnerable populations.
- Patrick Parbhu Dial, historian and consumer advocate, for his cultural and historical work.
- Eze Rockliffe, veteran musician and culturalist, for his contributions to Guyanese music and heritage.
- Pauline Thomas, cultural icon, for her dedication to preserving and promoting Guyanese culture.
These honorees join a select group of 21 individuals who have received honorary doctorates in the University’s 61-year history.
The recipients expressed profound gratitude, many highlighting how their work aimed to make meaningful contributions rather than seeking accolades.
