Countries around the globe today observed Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day, with a focus on the critical role of financial protection in accelerating access to essential health services.
The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized that equitable healthcare must be free of financial burdens that force families to choose between healthcare and basic necessities.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus highlighted that half of the world’s population still cannot access at least one essential health service.
Additionally, two billion people face financial hardships due to out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.
UHC Day 2024, under the theme “Health: It’s on the Government,” served as a reminder of the responsibility of governments worldwide to ensure that health systems are accessible, inclusive, and free from financial strain for citizens.
Dr. Ghebreyesus reiterated that health for all is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of sustainable development.
He stressed that the WHO continues to advocate for policies and measures that eliminate economic barriers to healthcare access.
Observed annually on December 12, Universal Health Coverage Day underscores the importance of building resilient health systems that leave no one behind.
