Unions Respond to President’s Announcements

In response to President Irfaan Ali’s recent announcements of incentives, various unions in Guyana have expressed their perspectives.

The Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) has acknowledged the additional financial benefits for teachers but stressed the importance of collective bargaining.

GTU President Mark Lyte stated that while they appreciate the adjustments announced by the president, the union believes there is still time for engagement to address the percentage before the year concludes.

On the other hand, the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) has termed the announcement as an affront to workers.

The GPSU argues that the government cannot unilaterally impose increases on workers without engaging in collective bargaining with the union.

In contrast, the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) welcomed the extension of the one-off bonus to sugar workers.

In a statement, GAWU expressed that this decision is a positive step towards addressing the needs of the working class in Guyana, highlighting the President’s commitment to the welfare of ordinary citizens.

These responses underscore the varied perspectives within the labor sector regarding the recent announcements, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and negotiation in addressing the concerns of different unions.
