Understanding Athlete’s Foot and Home Remedies

By Kristin Josiah

Athlete’s foot, a fungal skin infection that commonly begins between the toes, can cause discomfort and irritation for those affected.

In this edition of NCN Health, brought to you by GTM Insurance Company and Essential Care Pharmacy, we delve into the causes, symptoms, and home remedies for this condition.

Athlete’s foot is caused by the dermatophyte fungus, which thrives in warm, moist environments commonly found in places like showers, non-aerated room floors, and swimming pools.

Tight-fitting shoes worn by athletes can exacerbate the condition due to sweaty feet.

The infection is highly contagious and can spread through direct and indirect contact. Common symptoms include itching, soreness, burning sensations on the soles and between the toes, and the development of blisters.

Fortunately, several home remedies can help alleviate the symptoms of athlete’s foot.

Hydrogen peroxide can effectively kill the fungus on the surface of the foot, along with any surface bacteria that may lead to infection.

Similarly, rubbing alcohol can serve a similar purpose in eliminating surface fungus.

Another remedy is Vicks VapoRub, which contains eucalyptus oil and menthol, both possessing antifungal properties.

Massaging Vicks VapoRub onto the affected area nightly for at least a month can aid in treating the infection.

It’s essential to avoid scratching or touching the affected area, except when applying treatment.

Practicing proper hand hygiene before and after treatment can prevent bacterial infection and further spread of the fungal infection.
