The University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS) has partnered with Women’s Haven to launch a new project aimed at addressing period poverty and promoting better feminine hygiene practices.

The initiative, named “Washroom Amenities,” was officially launched on Monday during a ceremonial signing at the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association’s office.

Tirishatha Semple, the president of UGSS, highlighted that the project was born out of consultations with students, which revealed a significant need for accessible hygiene products on campus.

The “Washroom Amenities” project will see racks installed in both male and female washrooms across the university, stocked with essential sanitary items such as pads, liners, and toilet paper.

Semple expressed that the goal of the project is to ensure that all students feel comfortable, supported, and at home while on campus, adding that this initiative goes beyond just providing donations but signifies a commitment to care, collaboration, and student welfare.

Lexann McPhoy, CEO of Women’s Haven Guyana, shared that the partnership is also a step towards empowering women by fostering healthier conversations about feminine hygiene.

She emphasized the importance of breaking down the stigma surrounding menstruation and creating an environment of understanding and inclusivity.

McPhoy further expressed that this initiative will not only support women and girls but also involve men as allies to help promote a supportive and respectful atmosphere on campus.

Women’s Haven, recognized for its organic feminine hygiene products infused with graphene, will provide the sanitary items for the project.

These products are designed to reduce the risks of irritation and infections commonly associated with traditional hygiene products.

The project will offer female students free access to eco-friendly and health-conscious hygiene items, aiming to ensure that all students have reliable access to safe and organic feminine hygiene products.

Through this collaboration, UGSS and Women’s Haven hope to improve the well-being of students and contribute to the broader goal of reducing period poverty.
