The University of Guyana’s Berbice campus has inaugurated the Institute for Marine and Riverine Ecologies and Economies (IMAREE).

The new institute, established with government support, aims to address the labor crisis in the maritime and marine industries while promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Paloma Mohamed-Martin announced that IMAREE will train 700 students over the next four years through a comprehensive curriculum at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

The opening ceremony was attended by Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat and Public Works Minister Juan Edghill, who praised the institute as a significant advancement for the nation’s commitment to managing aquatic environments.

Minister Bharrat highlighted that the institute will support both conservation and economic activities, while Minister Edghill commended its alignment with global sustainability goals.

IMAREE will serve as a key center for research and education, addressing gaps in marine and riverine ecosystems knowledge through collaborations with universities and international organizations.
