-connecting students to Jobs/Opportunities
The University of Guyana is hosting a 2-day Career and Job Fair giving students and young professionals a direct pathway to higher education and employment.
The event gives attendees a chance to explore academic programmes while connecting with more than 40 leading public and private sector companies offering jobs and internships.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice Chancellor Dr. Paloma Mohamed Martin says recent workforce surveys show a disconnect between employer expectations and young people’s outlook.
She noted that many companies are still demanding high qualifications for low-paying roles, while young people are increasingly unwilling to accept those terms.

“So we have to look at how we are creating our job descriptions now and to make sure we don’t only say you have to have XYZ but say we are going to train you and this is going to be a likely succession path for you because otherwise, they not staying with you” she said.
Meanwhile, corporate partners emphasised the importance of partnerships, networking, and aligning education with workforce needs.
The Open Day and Job Fair continues on Saturday, April 18, from 9am to 4pm, offering students and job seekers a final opportunity to connect with employers, explore academic pathways, and take the next steps towards their future.
