In the latest installment of the Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition quarterfinals, the University of Guyana Berbice Campus Orators youth group emerged victorious against the Joshua Generation Youth Ministry.
The moot for this debate was “The exponential rise in Guyana’s gross domestic product is a testament to its economic growth and development.”
Felisha Mohamed, representing the UG Berbice Campus Orators youth group, passionately proposed that the exponential rise in Guyana’s gross domestic product indeed reflects its economic growth and development.
She presented compelling evidence, including a graph showcasing Guyana’s GDP from 2006 to 2022, which demonstrated pure exponentiality.
However, the opposition, represented by Jamicia McCalman of the Joshua Generation Youth Ministry, contested this viewpoint.
While acknowledging the exponential rise in Guyana’s GDP, McCalman argued that attributing it to the country’s growth and development would be disingenuous.
Instead, she pointed to sources such as the World Bank, which attributed Guyana’s GDP rise primarily to oil production, highlighting the dominance of this single industry.
Despite both teams bringing their A game in terms of expression, the judges noted that they mixed up their points of argument.
Ultimately, the University of Guyana Berbice Campus Orators youth group secured victory with a score of 240 points, surpassing the Joshua Generation Youth Ministry’s 213 points, and advancing to the semifinals.
As the competition progresses, anticipation builds for the remaining debates and the eventual winner of the Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition.
