Region One in Guyana has taken a significant step towards achieving 99 percent access to potable water with the commissioning of two new wells in the Moruca sub-district.
The commissioning of the two wells, located at 7 Branch Road and Karibuni in the Moruca sub-district, represents a significant milestone for the region.
These wells will provide scores of residents with access to clean and safe drinking water, addressing a critical need in the community.
Minister of Housing and Water, Hon. Collin Croal, highlighted the efforts of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) in improving potable water coverage in riverine communities.
Minister Croal emphasized GWI’s commitment to making significant improvements to increase access to potable water, particularly in remote areas like Region One.
Minister Croal outlined the ambitious targets set by GWI for increasing potable water coverage in Region One.
By the end of 2024, GWI aims to achieve 92 percent coverage in the region, with plans to reach 99 percent coverage by 2025.
This demonstrates a concerted effort to improve water access for residents in Region One.
Furthermore, Minister Croal mentioned that several other areas in the region will benefit from similar interventions aimed at enhancing access to clean water.
The government is investing approximately $700 million in Region One this year alone for the development of wells and other water infrastructure projects.
The commissioning of these two wells signifies a significant step towards improving the quality of life for residents in the Moruca sub-district and surrounding areas.
Access to clean and safe drinking water is essential for health, sanitation, and overall well-being, and these wells will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of the residents.
