Tragedy struck Region Six on Monday as two fires claimed multiple lives and caused significant property damage.

In #64 Village, Corentyne, a 34-year-old woman and four of her children lost their lives in a fire of unknown origin.

The victims were identified as Hemwatie Singh, her children Kelvin (14), Cindy (11), Brandon (10), and Tomesh Ramjatan (2).

According to the police, Singh’s 17-year-old son, who was home at the time, managed to escape unharmed.

He reported that the fire started in the lower flat of their home.

Singh and her younger children reportedly attempted to flee but were overwhelmed by the flames and retreated upstairs, where they became trapped.

Singh’s husband was not home during the incident, as he was in police custody assisting with a cattle rustling investigation.

The remains of the victims have been taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted.

Meanwhile, in New Amsterdam, a second fire destroyed Bob and Sons supermarket. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of this blaze, which caused extensive damage to the property.

Divisional Officer Clive McDonald of the Guyana Fire Service confirmed that investigations into both incidents are ongoing.

These devastating fires have left the community in shock as authorities work to uncover their causes and provide assistance to those affected.
