Under the Hinterland Housing Programme, twenty families from the Yarakinta and Nappi communities in Region Nine have been handed keys to their new homes.
The houses, measuring 20 by 25 feet, were constructed at an approximate cost of $3 million each.
Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, highlighted that this initiative is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring every citizen across the country has access to adequate housing.
During an outreach to the region, Minister Croal revealed that the Hinterland Programme involves the construction of 400 houses, with an investment of close to $700 million.
Currently, 120 of these houses are under construction in Region Nine alone.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the initiative, acknowledging the positive impact it has had on their lives.
Winston Marcello thanked the government for bringing the housing programme to Nappi for the first time, emphasizing the significance of the initiative for the community.
Regina Jonas and Grace Melville, two other beneficiaries, expressed their happiness and appreciation for their new homes, highlighting the improvements in their living conditions.
The first ten houses were previously handed over to flood-affected families on Kokerite Hill in Region One last November.
Building materials for the homes were sourced directly from the community and Lethem, emphasizing community involvement in the project.
As the Hinterland Housing Programme continues to provide homes for families across the region, it underscores the government’s commitment to improving living standards and promoting development in hinterland communities.
