…Guyana & Grenada Optimistic
President Irfaan Ali is optimistic that Trinidad and Tobago will soon address the honey exporting issue faced by Guyana and Grenada.
For several years, there has been a difficulty exporting honey into the Caribbean markets because of transshipment restrictions in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Twin Island Republic initially restricted the importation of honey from Grenada and other Caribbean countries over concerns of a potentially disastrous disease of honeybees, the American Foulbrood disease.
However, Trinidadian Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley has committed to addressing the issue.
Like President Ali, the Grenadian Minister with Responsibility for Agriculture and Lands, Adrian Thomas believes that the matter will be resolved soon noting that T&T and Grenada are working on an amicable solution.
While Trinidad is still being guided by an outdated Food and Drug Act of 1960 and Beekeeping and Bee products Act of 1935, both President Ali & Minister Thomas explained that it would have to be a decision by T&T government to repeal the law.
