A 28-year-old truck driver, Denzil Webb, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a tragic accident on Sheriff Street.
Webb, who resides in Belfield, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty and was granted bail in the amount of 500,000 dollars.
He is set to return to court on December 13, 2024.
The charge stems from an incident on November 19, where Webb was allegedly driving motor lorry GAH 5183 in a dangerous manner, resulting in the death of electrical contractor Carlton Smartt.
Eyewitnesses reported a devastating eight-vehicle collision, with one truck colliding with several others and fatally striking Smartt, who was jogging at the time.
Webb was also ordered to lodge his passport and report to the Kitty police station every second and last Friday of the month for the duration of the case.
In response to the growing concern over road safety, President Irfaan Ali has announced stricter measures to address reckless driving, including urging the Attorney General to review current laws and hold truck owners accountable for ensuring their drivers follow regulations.
