A devastating fire early this morning at Hope West, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, resulted in the death of a 3-month-old baby boy.

The incident occurred while the baby was in the upper flat of the family’s wooden and concrete house, which they had rented for over two years.

At the time of the fire, the baby’s two-year-old sibling was in the lower flat, and their mother, Chandroutie Manickram, was in the bathroom.

Manickram reported that she had just put the baby to bed and stepped into the bathroom when her older son alerted her to the fire.

Manickram, in distress, recounted her efforts to save her child but was unable to do so as the flames had already consumed the upper flat.

The fire spread quickly, and despite the arrival of fire services from Melanie and Mahaica Fire Stations, the blaze had taken its toll by the time they arrived.

The Guyana Fire Service reported that the fire was reported at 10:25 a.m., and the first fire tender arrived at the scene approximately ten minutes later.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Following the tragic discovery of her child’s remains, Manickram and her family were taken to the hospital after collapsing in shock.
