In 2024, Guyana saw a 14% decrease in traffic fatalities, signaling positive progress in road safety initiatives.
Despite this reduction, road accidents still claimed approximately 154 lives, with motorcycles involved in the majority of fatal incidents.
Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, expressed concern over the lives lost, emphasizing that even one death is unacceptable.
The Ministry, in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force Traffic Department, aims to reduce road fatalities to no more than 65 annually by 2030.
In alignment with the United Nations’ Road Safety Strategy, which seeks to cut traffic accidents by 50%, the Ministry is stepping up efforts to achieve this ambitious goal.
To support these initiatives, speed clocks have been installed along the country’s four-lane highways.
These devices are designed to monitor traffic speeds, read license plates, and track violations, improving enforcement and ensuring more efficient ticketing processes.
