The Tiger Bay community now has access to a new multi-sport recreational space, following the official opening of a community lot at the corner of Queen and Hope Streets, Georgetown.
The facility is expected to provide young people in the area with a safe and accessible environment to engage in basketball, futsal and other sporting activities, promoting healthy competition and positive youth development.
Speaking at the opening, President Dr. Irfaan Ali said the Government’s engagement with Tiger Bay is longstanding, noting that many community stalwarts have worked tirelessly over the years to improve the lives of residents. He highlighted ongoing and future initiatives, including relocation efforts aimed at ensuring families benefit from improved living standards.
President Ali assured residents that more development is on the horizon, reiterating his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth as it continues to “build for all.”
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand explained that the space will be jointly utilised by Mattai Supermarket and members of the Tiger Bay community. She described the initiative as a strong example of private-sector partnership and support for community-driven development.
Meanwhile, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs described the project as a historic gesture for the community, crediting the President for responding directly to the needs of residents and delivering tangible results.
To officially inaugurate the venue, youths from the area kicked off the President Irfaan Ali-sponsored ‘Neighbourhood Love’Tournament, marking the start of what is expected to be regular sporting and community activities at the new facility.
