In last evening’s edition of NCN Health, brought to you by the Guyana Trinidad Mutual Insurance Company Limited and Essential Care Pharmacy, we delved into the health benefits of sparkling water, also known as seltzer water or carbonated water.
Sparkling water, with its effervescent bubbles, has emerged as a healthier alternative to sugary soda, juice, and energy drinks. Here’s what you need to know:
Types of Sparkling Water:
- Club soda, soda water, seltzer water, mineral water, and tonic water are all variations of sparkling water.
- Seltzer water is artificially carbonated, while mineral water is naturally carbonated and sourced from springs or wells, containing minerals like magnesium and calcium.
- Club soda is artificially carbonated and enriched with added minerals such as sodium bicarbonate and potassium sulfate.
- Tonic water, while carbonated, contains added minerals like quinine, which gives it a bitter taste, along with sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.
Considerations:
- Opt for seltzers and mineral waters with zero added sugars, but limit consumption of tonic water due to its added sugars and potential side effects from quinine.
Benefits of Sparkling Water:
- Improved Digestion: Sparkling water may alleviate symptoms of digestive issues, such as constipation and stomach pain.
- Weight Management: Staying hydrated is essential for weight loss. Unsweetened sparkling water can help you feel fuller for longer and serve as a refreshing replacement for calorie-laden beverages, aiding in weight management.
- Hydration: Sparkling water hydrates just as effectively as regular water. It can be a valuable tool for breaking soda addictions and promoting healthier hydration habits. Experiment with adding herbs, fruit, or cucumber for added flavor without the calories.
