Technical Assistance Program Highlights Mining Week 2024 in Mahdia

By Delicia Janneire

The 2024 Mining Week activities concluded with a vibrant Port Knockers’ Day celebration in Mahdia, Region 8, marking a successful end to a series of events aimed at supporting and improving the mining industry.

The Port Knockers’ Day, a staple of the annual Mining Week, attracted residents from Mahdia and surrounding villages.

This year’s festivities included the launch of the Technical Assistance to Miners Programme, a key component of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission’s (GGMC) efforts to enhance mining operations.

As part of the programme, GGMC staff visited various mining sites to provide hands-on technical support.

The initiative involved distributing educational materials and inspecting mining operations to offer advice on improving techniques.

This support is crucial for ensuring that miners adopt best practices and comply with industry standards.

The Technical Assistance to Miners Programme is a significant aspect of the Ministry’s broader strategy to boost compliance and production within the mining sector.

By directly engaging with miners, the GGMC aims to foster better operational practices and address any challenges faced in the field.

Mining Week kicked off with a fitness walk on Sunday, followed by a range of events including an awards ceremony, stakeholder engagements, and various activities designed to celebrate and support the mining community.

This year’s theme, “LCDs 2030: Adopting Change, Overcoming Vulnerability, and Forging Sustainability,” underscored the commitment to advancing the industry while promoting sustainability and resilience.
