Following the MV Barima tragedy, medical staff continue to be at the center of the emergency response, with Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony confirming that every effort is being made to ensure survivors get the best care.
During an update from the perspective of his subject Ministry, Dr. Anthony explained that the Lima Regional Hospital has been the focal point of the medical emergency response.
“We activated a medical plan and at the Lima Regional Hospital, we were able to have a number of doctors and nurses who were ready to receive patients. The staff here have been working long hours and also trying their best to ensure we can put all the processes in place to ensure this is a seamless process,” the Minister said.
Dr. Anthony explained that psychologists and psychiatrists are a part of the team, ensuring holistic care for survivors and affected families… including those still in shock.
“We have here a team of medical personnel, including psychiatrist and psychologist, to offer help. In some cases persons are in shock. So its important we are there to counsel them. And in another few days, it is important we continue with grief counselling,” Dr. Anthony further advised.
