Teaching Grant to Aid Learning

In response to concerns raised about financial constraints affecting teachers and, in some cases, parents, Education Minister Priya Manickchand announced a new initiative to support educators.

Teachers will now receive a grant to help maintain and repair their classrooms.

Minister Manickchand emphasized that consultations with teachers revealed the need for monetary allocations to better address the needs of their respective classes. As part of this program, teachers on the coastland will receive $4,000 per child (the child does not receive the money, it goes directly to the teacher), while teachers in the hinterland will receive $5,500 per child. This approach allows teachers greater control and autonomy over how the funds are utilized.

Addressing concerns about potential misuse of the funds, Minister Manickchand defended the initiative. She highlighted that teachers have often used their own money for classroom needs, and it is now appropriate for them to receive this support. She emphasized that the program is government-funded and will be subject to accountability measures.

Minister Manickchand expressed hope that this initiative will alleviate some of the financial burden on teachers and parents alike. She urged citizens to refrain from politicizing education, emphasizing that negative impacts from such actions ultimately affect the youth.
