As some teachers continue their strike action, others are expressing their dissatisfaction with the situation and calling for a unified approach to address concerns.
While speaking to the media, teachers who have chosen to remain on the job voiced their reservations about the ongoing strike, labeling it as potentially beneficial only to executives and senior members of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU).
They emphasized the need for strike actions to benefit every teacher within the education system, not just a select few.
Some even criticized the representation provided by the union, citing personal experiences of being overlooked.
On the other hand, teachers who have reported for duty commended the government’s investments in the education sector, highlighting initiatives such as cash grants, salary increases, and scholarship opportunities.
They expressed optimism about the future of education in Guyana, citing positive developments and opportunities for growth.
Meanwhile, parents also weighed in on the situation, expressing concern about the impact of the strike on their children’s education.
While acknowledging the teachers’ right to strike, they emphasized the challenges posed by disrupted classroom activities and the importance of consistent education for their children’s development.
The Ministry of Education has condemned the strike, stating that it violates an agreement between the Ministry and the GTU.
It emphasized that conciliation and arbitration processes were still underway when the strike was initiated, indicating that the demands for such measures were premature.
Amidst these differing perspectives, the strike continues to disrupt educational activities, highlighting the need for constructive dialogue and resolution.
