‘Teach Them Young to Swim’ Programme Makes a Splash in Region Six

By Royan Abrams

The Easter edition of the ‘Teach Them Young to Swim’ programme kicked off in Region Six, offering over 100 young individuals between the ages of 6 and 18 the opportunity to learn swimming skills.

This initiative, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport through the National Sports Commission, aims to promote physical fitness, enhance water safety, and boost confidence among young participants.

The programme, spanning two weeks, features a comprehensive curriculum of swimming lessons and activities, overseen by certified instructors and lifeguards, ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment.

According to Randy Mangru, the Region Six Sports Officer, the programme has been instrumental in addressing the lack of swimming proficiency in the region.

Over the past two to three years, the initiative has produced notable results, enabling the region to contribute athletes to national-level competitions.

Mangru emphasizes the importance of conducting the programme during Easter and August holiday vacations to maximize participation among young people in the region.

Participants receive training ranging from basic swimming skills to advanced techniques across various phases of the programme.

With nearly 1000 young individuals benefiting from the ‘Teach Them Young to Swim’ programme over the past three years, it stands as a testament to the success and impact of initiatives aimed at promoting water safety and swimming proficiency among youth.

As the programme continues to empower young individuals with essential swimming skills, it contributes to building a safer and healthier community in Region Six and beyond.
