On Sunday, the Survivors Unite committee hosted a successful walkathon in New Amsterdam, Berbice, to raise funds to support survivors of vehicular accidents and their families this Christmas season.
The event, aimed at fostering community support and resilience, was a testament to the strength and courage of those who have faced the challenges of recovery from accidents.
The walkathon, organized by the Survivors Unite subcommittee of the National Road Safety Council, saw participation from community members, including local leaders.
Mayor of New Amsterdam, Wainwright McIntosh, spoke during the event, emphasizing the importance of the survivors’ resilience.
He noted that the walk was not just a physical journey but a symbol of the collective spirit of those on the road to recovery.
The walk also highlighted the ongoing efforts by local authorities to reduce road accidents.
Assistant Traffic Chief for Region Six, Inspector Rodwell Downer, discussed the department’s initiatives, including daily speeding exercises aimed at reducing accidents.
He reported a significant reduction in traffic incidents, with a 51 percent decrease in accidents this year, comparing the current total of 79 accidents to 160 recorded last year.
The funds raised from the walkathon will provide much-needed support for accident survivors and their families during the upcoming holiday season, ensuring they receive the care and assistance they deserve.
As the Survivors Unite committee continues its vital work, the walkathon served as a reminder of the community’s ability to come together and support those in need, while also raising awareness about road safety and the importance of responsible driving.
