Support Needed for Former Inmates to Prevent Reincarceration, Says Guyana Prison Service

By Nakasia Logan

In an effort to combat recidivism and facilitate the successful reintegration of former inmates, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) is calling for external support from stakeholders.

Senior Superintendent Mark Smith, Head of Finance at the GPS, emphasized the importance of sustained assistance for individuals transitioning back into society after their release from incarceration.

Smith highlighted the limitations faced by the GPS team once inmates are discharged, emphasizing the critical role of external collaboration in providing continued support.

He noted that without adequate assistance, individuals released from incarceration face increased risks of returning to criminal activities.

Part of the GPS’s strategic plan for 2024 includes engaging more stakeholders to support reintegration efforts.

Smith stressed the importance of reducing stigma against former inmates, as it directly impacts their likelihood of successful reintegration into society.

The Fresh Start Initiative, implemented by Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, aims to reduce recidivism by expanding opportunities for occupational training and creating pathways to financial independence for former inmates.

The initiative offers returning inmates skills and tools to establish businesses and sustain themselves in society.

By working together with stakeholders, the GPS aims to achieve the collective goal of facilitating the successful rehabilitation and reintegration of former inmates, ultimately contributing to safer communities and brighter futures for all.
