Representatives from Guyana’s sugar estates have expressed optimism following the signing of a three-year agreement between the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU).

The agreement includes annual wage increases, provisions for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and enhanced worker allowances.

These measures aim to provide much-needed financial relief and motivation for sugar workers as the industry faces ongoing production challenges while striving for greater productivity in the coming years.

Representatives from the Uitvlugt, Rose Hall, Albion, and Blairmont estates highlighted their appreciation for the agreement, noting its potential to improve the lives of sugar workers and their families.

They emphasized that the wage increases and additional benefits would serve as incentives to boost productivity, despite the industry’s current hurdles.

The sugar industry remains a vital component of Guyana’s economy, providing employment for thousands of workers and supporting numerous communities.

This multi-year agreement acknowledges the dedication of sugar workers while contributing to the sector’s revitalization.
