Sugar Production Set to Resume at Rose Hall Estate by Month’s End

Sugar production is slated to recommence at the Rose Hall Estate by the end of this month, according to Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.

The announcement was made during the consideration of budget estimates for the sugar industry.

Minister Mustapha revealed that approximately 2,500 hectares of sugarcane at Rose Hall are available for production in the first crop.

Responding to queries from the Opposition, Minister Mustapha emphasized that significant investments, amounting to $9 billion, were made to repair the estate, which reopened in September 2023.

In its reopening year, the estate produced 1031 metric tonnes of sugar, and the factory is expected to increase production with revised targets for each estate.

Regarding the operability of sugar boilers, Minister Mustapha clarified that there are no defects at the Rose Hall Estate.

Anticipating a 66% growth in the sugar industry this year, the Minister highlighted the industry’s substantial expansion in 2023, with 52% more land planted compared to the previous year.

The resumption of sugar production at the Rose Hall Estate signifies a positive step for the sugar industry in Guyana, contributing to economic growth and sustainability in the sector.
