On Sunday, local farmers in Lusignan, located on the East Coast of Demerara, had the opportunity to showcase and sell their fresh produce at a vibrant farmers market.
This event, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, was part of the Agriculture Month calendar of activities.
Deputy General Manager of the Guyana Rice Development Board, Kuldip Ragnauth, expressed satisfaction with the initiative, emphasizing that the Farmers’ Market, which commenced in region 3 at the start of the month, has achieved remarkable success.
He underscored that this endeavor is set to become an ongoing and integral aspect of Guyana’s agricultural landscape.
Shoppers flocked to the market early in the morning to avail themselves of the abundant array of fresh produce.
Many lauded the effort, citing the high cost of living, and expressed gratitude for the government’s initiative to provide affordable options for the public.
Randy Abrahams, a satisfied shopper, remarked, “I am glad they can go to various markets around the country and share this same view, giving people things at a reasonable price.”
Dr. Gillian Smith, another shopper, commended the market’s offerings, stating, “Pretty good, very competitive, and a lot of the food is very fresh, so you are getting good quality as well as some very competitive prices.”
The farmers market not only provides access to fresh produce but also offers them at reduced costs, contributing to more affordable options for the community.
The upcoming markets are scheduled for Lethem on October 28 and Kamarang on October 30, promising further opportunities for local producers to showcase their offerings.
