Stricter weight limit for trucks to be enforced in Berbice – Min. Edghill

Stricter enforcement of weight restrictions for trucks will soon be implemented across Region 6 as government has acquired additional mobile scales.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill says the measure is aimed at minimising damage caused to roads and bridges by overloaded trucks.

“I’ll be stationing teams with scales in Region 6 very soon. We have acquired another 20. We have delivered to us another 20 mobile scales, and the weight restrictions mechanism that we have announced publicly will be enforced in the Berbice area,” the minister said.

Responding to concerns raised by residents during a consultation meeting, the Minister assured that those living along the Canje Bridge, frequently facing vibrations when vehicles traverse the bridge, will soon be relieved. He said trucks will be weighed before proceeding with their loads, ensuring adherence to the limits.

“People just can’t pack trucks, however they feel like packing it, because while they are making money, they move everything in one trip. You are also damaging roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. So weight restrictions is something that we will be pushing heavily in Berbice,” he added.

The Public Works Minister had previously noted that overweight trucks cause severe and costly damage to infrastructure, far exceeding the value of fines. The new measures will strengthen enforcement and protect the country’s road network.
